Joel Clement was Director of the Office of Policy Analysis at the U.S. Interior Department until last week. He is now a senior adviser at the department’s Office of Natural Resources Revenue.<a href=”https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/im-a-scientist-the-trump-administration-reassigned-me-for-speaking-up-about-climate-change/2017/07/19/389b8dce-6b12-11e7-9c15-177740635e83_story.html>I’m a scientist. I’m blowing the whistle on the Trump administration. “On June 15, I was one of about 50 senior department employees who received letters informing us of involuntary reassignments. Citing a need to “improve talent development, mission delivery and collaboration,” the letter informed me that I was reassigned to an unrelated job in the accounting office that collects royalty checks from fossil fuel companies. . . . I believe I was retaliated against for speaking out publicly about the dangers that climate change poses to Alaska Native communities. During the months preceding my reassignment, I raised the issue with White House officials, senior Interior officials and the international community, most recently at a U.N. conference in June. It is clear to me that the administration was so uncomfortable with this work, and my disclosures, that I was reassigned with the intent to coerce me into leaving the federal government.”
The Other World War II American-Internment Atrocity “The Aleuts were interned against their will for the duration of the war, long after the Japanese were routed out of Alaska, and were largely neglected by the very government that said it was protecting them.”
Renaissance Knives Had Music Engraved on the Blades; Now Hear the Songs Performed by Modern Singers “These knives, which have musical scores engraved in their blades, brought a table together in singing their prayers, and may have been used to carve the lamb or beef in their “striking balance of decorative and utilitarian function.” Historians think that these “notation knives,” which date from the early 1500s, were probably used at banquets.
Star Trek IV Now Exists in the Same Universe As All Marvel Films Thanks to a Special Cameo I love this so very much.
Why I won’t buy one extra box of tissues for my kid’s school supplies; signed, a frustrated parent. Read this. It’s important, and it’s not what you probably think it is.
Worse Than It Seems—New study of harassment of graduate students by faculty members suggests that the problem is worse — both in level of offense and prevalence of repeat offenders — than many believe. “The study, which focused on complaints by graduate students, led to two major findings: most faculty harassers are accused of physical, not verbal, harassment, and more than half of cases — 53 percent — involve alleged serial harassers.” I remember senior students taking me aside to warn me about particular faculty. And I remember faculty also warning me about particular faculty. And I remember the faculty member who left long inappropriate harassing phone calls on an undergraduate’s message tape. And then there’s the other faculty problem; academic exploitation of grad students, like the serial tenured plagiarizer of grad student dissertations, or the tenured prof who incorporated a graduate student’s seminar paper as a book chapter, but did not credit the student or ask permission.
Al Franken on why he’s a Democrat. Watch this;
it’s not long, it’s important and it’s true.
💩🔥💰 Trumpery 💩🔥💰
💩🔥💰 sat down for an interview by The New York Times. Here’s a transcript. It’s not quite sensible, or really, not quite English, and it’s ridiculously embarrassingly inaccurate and lacking in facts, true facts, or even much truth. Fortunately, there’s 💩🔥💰’s interview with the New York Times, annotated by Talking Points memo.
💩🔥💰 doesn’t have even the faintest clue regarding what health insurance costs “From the moment the insurance, you’re 21 years old, you start working and you’re paying $12 a year for insurance, and by the time you’re 70, you get a nice plan,” Trump told the Times.
Japan’s first lady pretends not to speak English rather than chat with 💩🔥💰 And who could blame her?
We’re on the Brink of an Authoritarian Crisis If Trump fires Robert Mueller or pardons himself, Republicans won’t do a thing about it—and our democracy will be changed forever.
